Institute Overview
The Institute of Advanced Studies [Instituto de Estudos Avançados] (IEA) was founded in 1986 with the mission “to research and comprehensively discuss fundamental issues in science, technology, the arts, and other areas of knowledge, stimulating the generation of new ideas and contributing to the analysis of social issues and the development of public policies”. Since its establishment, IEA has offered the academic community and the general public opportunities to engage with the ideas of prominent Brazilian and international figures from scientific, political, and cultural fields. It has also produced essential proposals for Brazil’s economic, social, political, and cultural development. Emphasizing interdisciplinary debate, IEA plays a key role in shaping research and public policy guidelines. The interdisciplinary projects at IEA are carried out by research groups or visiting professors and researchers. IEA is located on the São Paulo Campus, in the University City [Cidade Universitária] (Butantã district), west side of the city of São Paulo, and is also based on the Ribeirão Preto Campus, in the city of Ribeirão Preto, and on the São Carlos Campus, in the city of São Carlos.

Research
IEA’s academic structure includes research groups, study groups, chairs, visiting professors, senior professors, and other categories currently being implemented, such as laboratories, directed study groups, forums, and more. Participation in activities is open to researchers and professionals with projects aligned with IEA’s meta-curatorships, subject to Board approval. Both Brazilians and foreigners can participate, whether they are members of USP or not, and regardless of their academic degrees, provided they demonstrate exceptional knowledge. Other researchers may be temporarily involved in specific projects and public activities.
