On July 15, the Rector of USP, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, and the Rector of the University of Turin, Stefano Geuna, signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting academic and scientific cooperation within their respective Faculties of Medicine.
The document outlines the promotion of exchanges between faculty and researchers, the sharing of courses and disciplines, and the development of research projects in areas such as public health, pediatrics, medical surgery, neuroscience, molecular biotechnology, oncology, among others.
The signing ceremony was held at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília as part of the program for the visit of the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, to Brazil. In the federal capital, Mattarella was received by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The heads of state exchanged views on topics such as the dialogue between the Brazilian G20 presidency and the Italian G7 presidency; the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty; and the reform of global governance institutions.
“It was a pleasure for USP to sign this agreement with the University of Turin in the presence of Presidents Lula and Mattarella. The agreement initially involves our Faculty of Medicine, but we hope to expand the agreements in the near future, considering that the Italian institution has more than 81,000 undergraduate and graduate students,” highlighted the USP Rector. “One of the themes emphasized by the presidents was the presence of the large Italian community in Brazil, of which I am a part,” joked Carlotti. The visit of the Italian head of state takes place in the context of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration to Brazil.
For the Dean of the USP Faculty of Medicine, Eloísa Bonfá, “the partnership with the University of Turin will be important to strengthen the academic and research activities of both institutions.” The professor emphasized that agreements will soon be signed for each specific activity of the cooperation.
Founded in 1404, the University of Turin offers 71 undergraduate courses and 87 graduate courses, in addition to 30 international double degree programs and joint degree programs.
Currently, USP has 62 agreements and accords with Italian universities. With the University of Turin, the USP School of Communications and Arts (ECA) maintains a partnership with the Department of Philosophy and Education Science.
