USP is one of the top 150 universities in the world, according to the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released today, August 15, by the Chinese consultancy Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. The ranking evaluated more than 2,500 institutions and ranked the top 1,000.
Harvard University maintained its leadership in the ranking for the 22nd consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Except for the English universities of Cambridge (4th place) and Oxford (6th place), all other institutions in the top ten are American. USP continues to be the highest-ranked Ibero-American university.
In total, 18 Brazilian institutions were classified. In addition to USP, notable rankings include São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), all ranked in the 401-500 group.
Published since 2003, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is considered one of the pioneering university rankings. The ranking uses six indicators to evaluate institutions, including the number of alumni and faculty who have won Nobel Prizes, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita research performance relative to the size of the institution.
