The Law School (FD) at USP achieved remarkable results in one of the oldest and most prestigious Law competitions in the world, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The team from the International Studies Center, coordinated by Professor Paulo Borba Casella from the Department of International Law at FD, won the national stages and reached the international semifinals.
Organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), the competition involves the participation of 3,000 students from around 700 colleges across 100 countries. It simulates a trial before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations, based on a fictional case encompassing significant issues of International Law.
After becoming the Brazilian champions, the team composed of students André Barreto Távora, Enzo Pedrosa Pontirolli, Julia Ferreira Pinto, Maria Luisa Yonezawa, and Stella dos Santos Lemos Fernandes advanced to the international rounds in Washington D.C., where they faced representatives from countries such as Azerbaijan, China, Nigeria, Spain, Hungary, the USA, Brazil, and the Philippines.
Brazil was the only country with two teams in the quarterfinals of the competition, which recreated the national rounds final with USP and the Federal University of Uberlândia. The FD team won the round and advanced to the semifinals, being eliminated only by the world champion. The milestone of semifinalist is Brazil’s record in the competition, also achieved in 2022 by the current team coach, Bárbara de Sousa Braz.
