In a ceremony held this Tuesday, May 14th, at the Hall of Acts of the Rectorate of USP, the University of São Paulo formalized a new partnership with Yale University. This represents the continuation and expansion of a cooperation agreement that was signed in 2023.
The goal is to develop a special, comprehensive, and long-term collaboration, encompassing all areas of knowledge, through joint calls for project funding. Participation will be open to academics from all units, and projects with an interdisciplinary nature will be encouraged. Throughout the duration of the five-year agreement, up to five calls for proposals are planned. The investment in these calls can reach up to US$ 50,000, with each university contributing US$ 25,000.
For the Vice-Rector of USP, Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda, the joint work with institutions of such importance has been crucial for the University: “By celebrating this renewal of a strategic and long-term partnership, it is essential to remember that USP is celebrating 90 years since its foundation. During this period, we have achieved significant progress, always balancing the preservation of tradition with the strength to face the challenges of the future. In this sense, Yale has been an inspiring reference for our actions and a strong partner in the exchange between professors, researchers, and students. The instrument we are signing now will be another tool to support our researchers at the forefront of knowledge.”
The Deputy Director of Academic Mobility at the USP Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation (Aucani), Paulo Braz, highlighted the potential of this partnership to favor the improvement of quality of life, especially in the major themes that permeate all nations: “This act represents a crucial step towards a joint direction. Together, we can combine our strengths, share knowledge, and develop strategies that have a real positive impact on the world. This cooperation will allow us to explore new scientific frontiers with cutting-edge research and leaders trained to face the challenges of the future. By joining forces, we have the opportunity to create innovative solutions that benefit not only our communities but the global collective.”
The American university was represented by the Vice-Rector for Global Strategy, Steven Wilkinson, who emphasized how the ties between the two institutions have been close for a long time: “We have a long history of working with Brazil, and our first Brazilian students date back to the 1830s. We are confident that the growth in the number of research exchanges and mobility projects will allow more scholars to truly help identify areas of complementary expertise and synergies to promote the development of high-level collaborative research and education projects.”
Founded in 1701, Yale University is the third oldest institution of higher education in the United States, the first to have awarded a doctoral degree, and also one of the most prestigious in global rankings, known for having trained five U.S. presidents and over 60 Nobel Prize winners.
