For the first time, the international meeting comes to USP and brings together presentations on different aspects of urbanization.

From November 20 to 23, 2024, USP will host the 4th International Seminar on Favela Urbanization, URBfavelas, an international meeting that discusses the processes of urbanization in favelas, such as public policies, urban planning, community resistance, architectural interventions, and infrastructure.

Those interested in participating in the presentations can submit their work until August 5 via this link. Expanded abstracts in Portuguese or Spanish, authored by up to five people, will be accepted. They must also align with one of the proposed thematic axes—(Re)cognize and Map; Organize and Mobilize; Plan and Finance; Design and Build; Regularization and Ownership; and Risk and Environment. The submission guidelines can be found on the official event website.

Up to 180 works will be selected, distributed over three days of the event. Results and the schedule can be checked starting September 2. Audience slots are subject to the capacity of the auditorium at USP’s International Dissemination Center.

This fourth edition is the first held in São Paulo and marks ten years since the initial activities. This year’s URBFavelas aims to update the debate on favela urbanization and reinforce the importance of this topic in Brazil.

“Holding the event in the country’s largest metropolis encourages a focus on regional production, learning, and accumulated experience from the Latin reality, where precariousness, irregularity, and institutional capacities take on specific contours,” says Pedro Carvalho, a member of the Seminar’s Organizing Committee.

The meeting is organized by the Housing and Human Settlements Laboratory (LabHab) of USP’s Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU), and the Laboratory for Urban and Regional Studies and Projects (Lepur) of the Federal University of ABC (UFABC).
